STUMPS VILLAGE MARKET
10th ANNUAL YOUNG ANGLERSí TOURNAMENT |
An army of volunteers began arriving at sunup at Shelter Island pier, 1776 Shelter Island Drive, Saturday August 13th. Catherine Miller lead the team of workers provided by IGFA , United Pier and Shore Anglers Club and San Diego Rod & Reel Club. Staging for free 10th Annual Young Angler Tournament went quickly as the team performed like a well oiled machine.
Registration of the more than 170 young anglers went quickly and soon John Campbell, the event MC flipped the switch on his megaphone and welcomed the junior anglers ages six through 15 and their parents crowding around him many clutching the donated Okuma fishing rods tightly.
At 10:00 am the starting horn sounded and children and parents alike dashed to their preferred spot. Bags of cut bait prepared earlier were opened and hooks baited. Throughout the morning judges rushed to lucky anglers with fish to mark their scorecard and assist with the release of the fish calling for the photographer to record the event.
One pier regular commented that he hadn't ever seen that many children on the pier at one time. Mid morning, Tommy Gomes, Catalina Offshore Products and his team began serving his famous fish tacos, each with a big smile and comment. Soon there was a steady stream of anglers and parents for the free lunch of tacos or hotdogs donated by Stump's Village Market of Rancho Santa Fe plus all the fixings and drinks.
All morning Michael Farrior, I.G.F.A. Trustee and his wife Susan visited with the children and parents passing out cards for free I.G.F.A. junior angler membership cards. While Catherine Miller, event coordinator made an effort visit with and invite each and every person on the pier to have lunch with the participants.
At 1:00 M.C. John Campbell declared lines out and along with his assistants began distributing goodie bags to all the participantsr. Shoulder to shoulder participants big and small pressed in with bright smiles to collect their gift bags, fishing tackle or gift certificates from landings and local businesses. Every entered angler had won something assuring no losers, no tears.
